The Guardian reported earlier this year that 2017 saw, according to the Anti-Defamation League, “the largest year-on-year increase since the Jewish civil rights group began collecting data in 1979” -- a staggering 57 percent surge!

White Supremacists, white nationalists and neo-Nazis carried rifles, Swastikas and Confederate flags in a city over 2,500 miles from Spokane. But hate and bias incidents are just as much of a reality here.

The rhetoric politicians use after terrorist attacks is correlated closely to sharp increases and decreases in hate crimes.

More than half of the people who said they were the victim of a hate crime in recent years did not report the incidents to police.

After spending five days in Washington, D.C. for the Women's March, Spokane resident Lena Negrete came home to find a sign in her yard that read, "White Lives Matter More!" The sign was signed, "K.K.K. The true boys in da hood" and was placed in front of the "Black Lives Matter" sign that Negrete has had in her yard since summer.

I wondered if I had just been part of interrupting a hate crime...
