As the nation marks the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, faith and community groups across the region are blending celebration with reflection. From a Moscow coalition’s democracy-minded picnic to a sunrise Earth circle in Seattle and a carillon concert closing out the week in Spokane, here’s what’s happening June 29-July 5.

God & Country Festival
July 1 | Nampa, Idaho | Nondenominational

One of the largest nondenominational faith celebrations in the Pacific Northwest comes to the Ford Idaho Center Amphitheater, bringing the regional community together for fellowship, live Christian bands, military and civic appreciation and a fireworks show. The event is free. Find details here.

Roots of Joy Earth Circle
July 4 | Seattle | Earth-based/Nature spirituality

Participants gather at Carkeek Park’s lower meadow from 9 to 10:15 a.m. to sing, hear a short sermon or poem and walk or sit in quiet communion with nature before regrouping to share thoughts and experiences. Event details.

4th of July Picnic
July 4 | Moscow, Idaho | No religious affiliation

United in Community, a newly-formed Moscow coalition dedicated to building bridges and preserving democracy, will sponsor a free, open-to-the-public picnic at East City Park from 1 to 4 p.m. Attendees are asked to bring their own picnic food and drink; organizers will provide free ice cream, popsicles, games and music. The event celebrates the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Nine organizations currently make up the coalition: Braver Angels, Indivisible, Inland Oasis, Latah County Human Rights Task Force, Moscow Interfaith Association, Moscow League of Women Voters, St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, the Unitarian Universalist Church of the Palouse and the United Church of Moscow, with more expected to join. The coalition aims to facilitate communication, collaboration and support to strengthen a united Moscow and protect democratic institutions.

Carillon Concert
July 5 | Spokane | Christian

St. John’s Cathedral Music Series presents a carillon concert at noon featuring Wesley Arai, following a festive picnic coffee hour after worship.

Beautiful Liberations: A Daylong Retreat to Brighten the Heart
July 5 | Spokane | Buddhist

Clear Mountain Monastery hosts a meditation retreat with Ajahn Nisabho and Ayyā Ahiṃsā from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Harmony Woods Retreat Center, 11507 S. Keeney Rd. The day includes guided meditation, walking meditation, dhamma talks and a closing teatime, centered on the Buddhist practice of brightening the heart through loving-kindness, rejoicing and joy.
