Magic Lantern to screen Oscar-submitted film ‘Palestine 36’

The Magic Lantern Theater and The Inland Northwest Coalition for the Liberation of Palestine will host a special sneak preview screening of “Palestine 36” on Saturday, Nov. 29, at 4:15 p.m. The film will be shown at the Magic Lantern located at 25 W. Main Ave. The screening coincides with the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People.

Directed by Annemarie Jacir and featuring an ensemble cast including Hiam Abbass, Saleh Bakri and Jeremy Irons, “Palestine 36” is a historical drama set during the 1936 Arab revolt against British colonial rule. The film, which has been selected by more than a dozen international film festivals and is Palestine’s official submission for the 98th Academy Awards, follows a man caught between his village home and his work in Jerusalem as tensions escalate between the British Empire, anti-colonial forces and Jewish refugees fleeing European persecution.

Inland Oasis to hold World AIDS Day vigil in Moscow, ID

Inland Oasis will host a candlelight vigil for World AIDS Day at 5:30 p.m. on Dec. 1 at the fountain in Friendship Square in Moscow. The Rev. Mary Beth Rivetti, former rector of St. James Episcopal Church in Pullman and current supply clergy at St. Mark’s in Moscow, will lead a prayer and time of reflection.

The vigil comes as the Centers for Disease Control reports 39,201 Americans were living with HIV/AIDS in 2023, including people on the Palouse. Inland Oasis staff will provide bags with red ribbons and tea light candles. More information is available at www.inlandoasis.org.

Activist to discuss fighting petrochemical pollution in Louisiana’s ‘Cancer Alley’

Shamyra Lavigne-Davey, executive assistant for RISE St. James Louisiana, will discuss her organization’s fight against petrochemical pollution in Louisiana’s “Cancer Alley” during a free Gonzaga online event at 4 p.m. on Dec. 2. The event will be livestreamed on Zoom.

“Cancer Alley” refers to the industrial corridor between New Orleans and Baton Rouge that houses more than 150 petrochemical plants and has the nation’s second-highest cancer rate. Lavigne-Davey, a third-generation environmental justice activist and native of St. James, Louisiana, will discuss RISE St. James’ work as a faith-based grassroots organization fighting for clean air and water and against petrochemical industry expansion in St. James Parish and surrounding river parishes. 

A 2023 Young, Gifted, And Green: 40 Under 40 Award recipient, Lavigne-Davey has been featured as a panelist at the 2023 and 2024 Essence Festivals and currently serves as an advisor on the Conceptual Committee for the Frontline Resource Institute. Registration information is available online.

Journey to Bethlehem Spokane to perform Dec. 5-7

Journey to Bethlehem Spokane features volunteers from several denominations in Spokane, as well as live animals, including sheep, goats and donkeys. This is an annual family event for the community located at the South Hill Seventh-day Adventist Church on the corner of 57th Ave and Freya (5607 S Freya St.). Doors will be open from 6-8 p.m. on Friday night and from 4-7 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday nights. No tickets or reservations are required but expect to wait in line as the event is well attended. Live Native Art Auction & Market Set for Dec. 6 at Philanthropy Center 

Spokane will host a celebration of Native arts and culture on Saturday, Dec.6, at The Philanthropy Center, located at 1020 W Riverside Ave. Doors open at 10 a.m, with a silent auction running from 12-6 p.m. and a live auction from 6-8 p.m. Organizers are currently seeking artists, art submissions, vendors and volunteers to participate in the event. Celebration of Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception in Colton, WA

On Monday, Dec. 8, the St. Gall Catholic Church will host a celebration of the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception. The celebrant will be Bishop of Spokane, the Rev. Thomas A. Daley. The service will be performed in both the English and German Languages to celebrate the heritages of the St. Gall and St. Boniface parishes. 

The service will take place at The St. Gall’s Catholic Church at 306 Steptoe St. in Colton, Washington. The Holy Rosary will start at 5 p.m. and the Holy Eucharist will be at 5:30 p.m. Following the mass, there will be a German sausage dinner in the gymnasium of the Guardian Angel St. Boniface School next to the church.
