FāVS News Brief

“Guns & Moses,” a new film exploring antisemitism and self-defense, will be showing in local theaters Sept. 7-11.

The film is directed by Salvador Litvak, known as “The Accidental Talmudist” and director of the Passover comedy cult hit “When Do We Eat?”

With the tagline “May God and Your Glock Protect You,” the movie explores themes of rising antisemitism, extremism, religious tradition and the moral complexities of self-defense.

The “Guns & Moses” story

“’Guns & Moses’ presents a scenario where American Jews arm themselves and fight back,” The Hollywood Reporter said in their review.

The story is about Rabbi Mo Zaltzman, who is a beloved Hasidic rabbi who leads a congregation in a dusty desert town in California. They get violently attacked, and police quickly arrest a young white nationalist who threatened them in the past. Zaltman doesn’t think the boy did it and investigates on his own. He soon realizes he needs a gun to battle the real enemy, even though he’s “not a gun guy.”

“At the heart of the film is the unexpected bond between the rabbi and the antisemite, as well as Mo’s looming fear that he won’t pull the trigger if he has to … and that he will,” according to the film’s description online.

Inspired by the real-life 2019 shooting at the Chabad of Poway synagogue in Poway, California, “Guns & Moses” delivers a mix of suspense, moral courage and cultural relevance — confronting the rise of antisemitism. The film has a Rotten Tomatoes audience score of 96%.

The cast includes Christopher Lloyd (“Back to the Future”), Neal McDonough (“Minority Report”), Dermot Mulroney (“My Best Friend’s Wedding”), Mark Feuerstein (“What Women Want”) and Alona Tal (“Broken City”).

The movie will be shown at Regal Northtown Mall and AMC River Park Square in Spokane; Regal Spokane Valley in Spokane Valley; Regal Riverstone in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, and Hayden Cinema in Hayden, Idaho.
