FāVS News to host live conversation on Christian nationalism coverage

By FāVS News Staff

Ven. Thubten Chodron, abbess of Sravasti Abbey, will join the authors of a July FāVS News analysis of Freedom Con for a live virtual conversation Friday, Aug. 28, from 3-4 p.m., following reader response to the piece.

The panel, “What we saw at Freedom Con: A conversation on faith, politics and coverage,” brings together Chodron and the article’s authors, Joshua Tom and Jason Wollschleger, for a public conversation sparked by her challenge to the story’s framing.

Panelists include Chodron; Tom, associate professor of sociology and director of the University Scholars Honors Program at Seattle Pacific University; and Wollschleger, professor of sociology and MSW program director at Whitworth University. FāVS founder and executive director Tracy Simmons will moderate.

Tom and Wollschleger’s analysis examined Freedom Con, a conference where speakers discussed reshaping Washington state government around a conservative Christian agenda. The piece drew a range of reader responses, including from Chodron.

The event is free and open to the public. Registration is required and available at https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/1m492bGlQrev1OyCnNGdxA
