I think it's metaphorical for the end of our human life individually — we come into being with God — but not a Scriptural literalist with the ideas of Armageddon and the end of the world period.

I wonder if the brutality of Revelation is a way to describe the pain we can feel when we begin to sever ourselves from this life into something unknown and the sorrow of leaving family and friends.
