More than 14 percent of Spokane residents are living below the poverty level, according to the United States Census Bureau. By definition, that means families of four are surviving on less than $23,000 annually.

PROVO, Utah (RNS) The 35-acre campus is an island of young people, where teens and 20-somethings outnumber grown-ups by 10-to-1.

The place is awash in fresh-faced students, and even the workers — from the cafeteria to the copy center, the mailroom to the bookstore — and most of the teachers are under 30.

Immaculate Heart Retreat Center will offer opportunities to explore its programs, grounds and facilities on July 17 and Aug. 7. 

The “Road to Discovery” programs feature a facility and grounds tour along with a brief program and a light lunch.

Normally I share how my LDS faith impacts my life, but today I’d like to give a shout out to the Lutherans, whose faith moves them to action, as faith always should.

According to the Lutheran Social Services of South Dakota website, Lutherans believe that Christ’s love compels them to serve, and that all people are created by God with worth and dignity.

On June 19, at 7 p.m., Friends of Compassion will meet to discussion "Catholic Compassion: Practices and Motivation."

The meeting will be in the SNAP Buildling, 3102 W. Ft. George Drive.
