June 15 marked the city’s first Drag Queen Story Hour, a national program that brings drag queens into local libraries to read to children as a way to expose kids to queer role models and get them thinking about gender fluidity, according to the DQSH website.

As a mom who has looked forward to a local Drag Queen Story Hour for literally years, I couldn’t be more excited to take my kid to this one. I am a Christian coming from an open and affirming congregation, and I see nothing wrong with affirming the humanity and divine image in all of us, regardless of what we wear, whom we love, or how we express ourselves.

Drag Queen Story Hour started about four years ago in San Francisco with drag queens reading to children and has since grown into a national event.
