I was honored this week to represent the atheist/freethinker/humanist position on a panel discussion on “Religious, Spiritual, Neither” held at Fairchild Air Force Base to help their base leaders and staff better understand the varied beliefs of those under their command.
To the extent that you can find hope and comfort in anything, it is in our fellow human beings, and the things they make and do, the music and art and fine company, the hope of each new smiling child's face with so much promise for the future.
From a nonbeliever's perspective, it is the absence of strong "proof" of a particular religion's truth that is the problem. At no time have I ever received a revelation from non-god to declare that non-god doesn't exist. So one can ask why the atheist doesn't find the "proofs" of a particular god persuasive (and hence the reason for not believing in it).
Uber-atheist Sam Harris is getting all spiritual.
In his new book, “Waking Up: A Guide to Spirituality Without Religion,” the usually outspoken critic of religion describes how spirituality can and must be divorced from religion if the human mind is to reach its full potential.
In the shortest form it should be obvious: atheists don't believe in any gods, and don't require the precepts of the various god operating manuals to make decisions in our daily lives.
