Spokane Women’s Rally set for Jan. 18 at Riverfront Park

The Spokane Women’s Rally will take place Saturday at 11 a.m. Jan. 18 at the Big Red Wagon in Spokane’s Riverfront Park.
Pia Hallenberg, a local writer, is the chair of the steering committee organizing the rally.
Hallenberg said she reached out to around thousands of people asking them to attend and is hopeful a sizable crowd will participate.
YWCA CEO Jeanette Hauck will be speaking at the rally, along with the Rev. Gen Heywood of Veradale United Church of Christ, City Council President Betsy Wilkerson and NAACP Spokane President Lisa Gardner.
Hallenberg said the rally will be outside and will not include a march due to costs, a change from previous years.
Hallenberg said she decided to help organize this year’s rally after worrying about the rights of queer people and women.
“I worry about the rights of women in this country, and I certainly worry about the rights of the LGBTQ+ community. That was the main reason why I was like ‘OK, I have to do something,'” Hallenberg said. “Let me tell you, I emailed everybody I could think of, hoping that somebody else was doing it because I didn’t want to have to do it.”
The Spokane rally will coincide with the People’s March taking place in Washington, D.C.
