Summer wedding season is in full swing – but how many of those wedding ceremonies have faith at the forefront?

For some, a wedding day still means “goin' to the chapel, and we're gonna get married.” The website Beliefnet has a beautiful album of religious wedding traditions.

But these days, many weddings are veering away from the religious. Just about anyone can officiate – the Universal Life Church and the American Council of Wedding Officiants both offer quick and easy steps to ordination.

More atheist and humanist agencies, such as the Humanist Society and the Center for Inquiry, are developing ordaining programs to establish nontheist ministers to perform weddings and funerals; people are coming together for weddings grounded in the common theme of unbelief.

So: Were religious beliefs part of your wedding ceremony? (Or, if you aren't married yet – do you want religious beliefs to be part of your wedding?) Take our poll – and if you'd like, leave a comment to share your experiences.
