Since January of 2013 SpokaneFāVS has organized community discussions about newsworthy faith and ethics issues. The opportunity for the Spokane community to dialogue offline is one of the many things that makes SpokaneFāVS special.
However, until we can find a new location, Coffee Talks will be put on hold for the remainder of the year.
I started Coffee Talks after the Newtown shootings because people of faith, or people interested in theology, needed to come together to discuss what had happened. At that first Coffee Talk there was standing room only. We’ve had numerous Coffee Talks since then that have been just as well attended as panelists and community members discuss challenging and important issues, like the Syrian Refugee Crisis, engaging millennials, and addressing racism and prejudices – to name a few.
Originally we held these Coffee Talks at a coffee shop, hence the name. The casual setting of a coffee shop was intended. But we outgrew most area coffee houses and have since moved these discussions to The Community Building. We are so grateful for The Community Building’s generosity; however, decreased attendance affirms that these panels are better held in a setting where food and drinks are flowing and people can come and go more casually.
Our hope is that we can pause Coffee Talks for November and December and use that time to seek out a new venue.
