I wonder what caught Moses’ attention in the burning bush?
Surely he had seen many fires in the desert
while out tending his flock.
Why was this fire any different?
This fire that seemed to be contagious
and engulf him in its flame,
never to be the same.
Propelled on a journey
back to Egypt
to his homeland
to free his people
and in doing so, himself.
The burning bush was unique
in that it was on fire but not burned up,
consumed by God, yet not destroyed.
From the luminescent energy comes
the profound truth of the words,
“I am that I am”
understanding that God is beyond
all names and concepts and labels.
This encounter begins Moses’ lifelong contemplative journey
of beholding the face of God
which later transforms his own face
to glow with the light of God
as he himself becomes the burning bush.
He beckons us to follow him out of bondage.
He calls us to the freedom of love.
He call us to be aflame with God.
And to encounter God in our lives so that
we see every bush ignited with the fire of God,
every person aflame with the Spirit of God,
And we take off our shoes
for we realize we are on
holy ground.
