Religious Science is one of the New Thought religions (with Unity and Divine Science among others) and was founded by Dr. Ernest Holmes in the early 1900s.
Holmes was raised in a Christian home. He had a voracious appetite for truth, seeking to learn and understand through the teachings of the Bible, the Vedas, Tao, the Quran and other great teachings, as well as great thinkers from Aristotle to Emerson. He studied the Transcendentalist movement, a group of men and women (including Ralph Waldo Emerson, Thoreau, and Margaret Fuller) who questioned the doctrine of the Unitarian movement and believed in the inherent good of people and nature and in a God that is one of oneness and unity with all creation.
As Religious Scientists, we believe that God is all that is, that the infinite intelligence and creative power of the universe has created all out of the very stuff of itself and that the inherent nature of all is good. We believe that this creative power flows through all life and that we create our lives by the thoughts we think and the beliefs we hold. We believe that we can re-create our experience at any moment through changing our thinking and our beliefs. We believe that all people are on their own path and that all paths lead to God.
We believe that all religions are perfect for those who follow them. They serve to support individuals on their path. We do not believe there is one “right way” to find truth but rather, we believe truth lies within each of us.
It is our intent with this column to answer questions based on our beliefs, to clarify any misunderstandings and to share who we are. We are not here to change or challenge the reader’s beliefs or to proselytize ours, but rather, to expand understanding and cultivate an opening of minds and hearts. We invite any and all questions about Religious Science and will answer each based on our understanding as ministers.
