The four-person band Metric released Gold Guns Girls as part of Fantasies in 2009.

Writer Emily Haines is well known for telling what’s wrong with the world to an upbeat alternative dance tempo. Although Gold Guns Girls was said to be inspired by the 1983 movie Scarface, I think it makes a great commentary on the battle over guns laws today. Haines seems to be saying that it’s not money, violence, or sex that completes us.  “All the gold and the guns in the world wouldn’t get you off.” The problem of too many guns is grouped together into a greater issue of money, violence, and sex. The refrain pops the question of where it will take us. “More and more, more and more, more and more; is it ever gonna be enough?”

Fantasies won the Juno Alternative Album of the Year in 2010 and Metric was the Juno Award Group of the Year, Canada’s version of the Grammy’s. Gold Guns Girls topped Billboard’s Alternative charts for a number of weeks in that same year. The song has also been used in a number of movies and TV shows.
