Written by Megan Phelps-Roper—who is the granddaughter of Fred Phelps, the infamous and now deceased founder of the church—the book is a surprisingly loving tale about a formidable family, whose practice of free speech is at once inspiring and yet very harmful to not only those outside the church, but to the members inside as well.

Are our words ever pointless?

I’ll admit I occasionally look at Twitter while I am at work.  And sometimes (just sometimes), I like to click links and read articles or see the photos of the “top 10 best and worst” of (fill in the blank).  While this is clearly not the best use of my time, I never let it get in the way of what I need to get done on any given day.

Today, I happened to click on a link for the “World’s Most Pointless Protest Signs.”

Counter-protesters targeting Westboro Baptist Church

Thousands of people wearing red shirts gathered in this city's downtown Saturday (July 21) to honor an Army solider killed recently in Afghanistan — and to fend off Westboro Baptist Church.
The controversial church, which is based in Topeka, Kan., had posted fliers around Columbia in advance of the funeral of Army Spc. Sterling Wyatt, who was killed July 11 by an improvised explosive device.
