This weeks marks the 70th anniversary of the U.S nuclear bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and two Spokane organizations are asking the community to gather in remembrance of the attacks.

The Peace and Justice Action League of Spokane (PJALS) and Spokane Veterans for Peace will lead a ceremony on Aug. 6 at noon at Riverfront Park between the carousel and the river. Members from the organizations plan to release white flowers into the Spokane River and hear from community leaders who will speak about the topic, including the Rev. Andy CastroLang.

The remembrance will be followed by a small delegation delivering a letter and a petition to our local members of Congress calling for cuts to the Pentagon budget, according to a press release.

“We want to honor the lives lost during these two brutal attacks 70 years ago. We are at this moment at a crossroads that will determine our future. Do we continue to put fuel on the fire with military action as our only response to unrest OR do we begin to explore diplomatic solutions such as the deal with Iran?” said Shar Lichty, PJALS organizer in a press release.
