Just over two weeks after Generations Barbershop gave free haircuts to youth on the Spokane Tribe reservation, Salon Retro is offering the same service to young girls and women on the reservation this coming weekend.

Kathy Bymers, owner of the salon, said the partnership started because one of the women who works there is in the Tribe.

Because the Tribe did an event with Generations Barbershop for young men, Ricky Sherwood, a Midnite Mine community liaison for the Tribe and an organizer of the event, said it made sense to do the same for young women as well.

“Anytime we can do something for any of our youth to provide a positive experience it is a great thing. Cinnamon [Ford] and the rest of the crew at Salon Retro are looking to provide not just haircuts and a wash, they want to help create an experience,” Sherwood said.

Salon Retro event targets girls in grades K-12

The event is exclusively for young girls and women from kindergarten through 12th grade who reside on the Spokane Tribe reservation and is meant to help them feel confident and prepared for a successful school year, according to a Facebook post. Each girl who attends will be provided a complimentary wash and haircut.

When it comes to girls, Bymers said they need pampering, and the ones they are offering the free services to are a part of Spokane that is neglected.

“If they look good, they feel good, and that’s a win-win,” Bymers said.

Sherwood explained it’s amazing how a small act of kindness or support can significantly boost someone’s self-belief, creating a ripple effect that extends far beyond the initial interaction.

“When individuals feel good about themselves and their capabilities, they’re empowered to take on challenges, overcome obstacles and ultimately achieve their goals with greater resilience and determination,” he said. “We all have the opportunity, in our daily interactions, to contribute to this positive cycle, fostering a more supportive and uplifting environment for everyone.”

Bymers said her stylists are so excited to meet the young women who will be receiving free services that day, adding that the excitement is kind of infectious.

Sherwood said he is excited to just see the community come together to do something positive for their youth, adding that their children deserve to be recognized and celebrated.

To take advantage of an opportunity like this, Sherwood said it takes a lot of time and effort by many people to make an event like this happen.

“It’s for the kids and we hope that they get the most out of the experience,” he said.

He added he wanted to thank the salon for the collaboration with the Spokane Tribe to provide this opportunity, as well as thank the Spokane Tribe Casino for the assistance in making events like these possible.

The event will be held on Sunday, Sept. 7, at the salon. Appointments must be reserved and can be done by emailing rickys@spokanetribe.com as soon as possible. When emailing, parents and guardians are asked to include their daughter’s full name, grade level and preferred appointment times. They will be contacted to confirm the appointment as well as to answer questions.
