The Vatican has confirmed that Bishop Blase Cupich will be installed as the archbishop Chicago on Nov. 18.

At a press conference in Chicago this morning it was announced that he will succeed the conservative Cardinal Francis George, who has been battling bladder cancer.

Cupich, who has been labeled a ‘moderate,’ said at the conference — in Spanish — that he will focus on immigrant families.

He has been pushing for immigration reform and his views on social justice and working with the marginalized align with the pontiff’s.

Cupich, originally from Nebraska, came to Spokane in 2010 from Rapid City, Iowa.

Representatives from the Catholic Diocese of Spokane was not available for comment.

Cupich has led the Spokane Diocese since 2010.

SpokaneFAVS will continue reporting on this breaking story.
