It was my senior year of high school and he and my mother were going through a separation. I had expressed interest in moving in with my mother until he said in a quiet voice that he would disown me if I decided to move out.

Now, he wasn’t serious about his threat. He was heartbroken over my mother’s decision to leave him. Still, this could have not come at a worse time in my life as I was about ready to graduate high school and getting into a new relationship after ending an old one.

He later apologized and I told him it was OK. He said it was not and he was right. A parent should never threaten to disown their child. Even if the child has done something wrong — whether it is in the eyes of the parents or by society's standards — a parent should never cease express love for their child.

When a child does something wrong, we should enjoy them and give them support, and not shun them.
