Spokane Habitat for Humanity celebrates newest home for family in time for holidays

News Brief by FāVS Staff

On Wednesday, at noon, Habitat for Humanity-Spokane will welcome a family of seven into their newly built home just in time for the holidays. The home, 162 S. Aspen St., is located in the Highland Village neighborhood of Airway Heights.

“Habitat Home Dedications are an extraordinary experience, especially as we prepare for the holidays,” shared Michelle Girardot, CEO of Habitat for Humanity-Spokane.

Majok and Nyibol have five children and have been in the homeownership program for the last few years. Over that time, they have completed their partnership requirements and saved for closing costs. They are ready to close on their new home, opening a future full of possibilities.

With the cost of a first-time home in Spokane County averaging $400K, Majok and Nyibol could not afford a house that would accommodate their family size.

The Habitat Homeownership Program builds homes and sells them at cost. The owners also pay for the home with a monthly mortgage payment of no more than 30% of their qualified income. This makes the American dream accessible to qualified individuals and families earning below 80% of the area’s median income.

Majok and Nyibol’s home is one of 16 units in Phase II of the Highland Village Development. It was built in collaboration with the City of Airway Heights, Spokane County, Habitat for Humanity-Spokane, Community Frameworks and Greenstone Homes.

“The cost of a home is out of reach for far too many, but the generosity of the Spokane County community makes Habitat for Humanity’s mission possible, and we are beyond thrilled for Majok and Nyibol’s family as they start their new future,” Girardot said.
