The Rev. Martin Elfert, author of our Father Knows Best column, has been prompted to write two posts about suicide recently.

His posts come at a time when suicides are making headlines.

As suicide rates of military personnel have risen to about 22 per day, more light is shining on the struggles of people with mental illness or depression.

And, this week, a man protested France's approval of same-sex marriage by shooting himself at the altar inside Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris.

At the same time, religious leaders are exploring how the church can better serve those with mental illness to prevent suicides. And the Mormon church has softened its position on suicide and church status.

Thoughts of suicide are a very private thing, but tell us, in this private poll, have you ever contemplated suicide?

Martin Elfert
The Rev. Martin Elfert is an immigrant to the Christian faith. After the birth of his first child, he began to wonder about the ways in which God was at work in his life and in the world. In response to this wondering, he joined Christ Church Cathedral in Vancouver, British Columbia, where he and his new son were baptized at the Easter Vigil in 2005 and where the community encouraged him to seek ordination. Martin served on the staff of the Episcopal Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist in Spokane, Wash. from 2011-2015. He is now the rector of Grace Memorial Episcopal Church in Portland, Oreg.
